How devastating would this be? That moment when he finally realizes that they’re doomed? They’re all doomed? and they all followed him because he believed it so strongly that they couldn’t help but believe too? What is going on in his head? France, his beloved Patria, didn’t rise up like he thought they would. All other barricades were mercilessly massacred or disbanded from lack of belief. And no one is coming to help them.
THEY ARE ALL ALONE.Does Enjolras go through the names of everyone there, one by one, and take a moment to truly grasp that they will all be dead in a few minutes? Does he, for the first time, feel afraid that his “little life” really DOESN”T mean anything? He’s not afraid to die, he’s just afraid that it won’t matter.
And then his friends, his comrades, his brothers start singing. They aren’t leaving either.
And some of his hope comes back.
